Once the snow flies, a hot tub can be the most-used thing at a cabin or acreage. It's also a large electrical load sitting in water, outdoors, through a long winter. That's why the wiring matters: the circuit has to be sized for the tub's heater and pumps, protected by a GFCI, and fitted with a disconnect where the code puts it.

Most full-size tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and the tub's manual or nameplate tells us the breaker and wire size. Some small plug-in models run on 120 volts, but they still need a proper GFCI-protected outlet, not an extension cord. Before anything else, we check whether your panel has room. On older homes and cabins it sometimes doesn't, and that's when a panel upgrade comes in.

Timing helps. If you can, call us before the tub arrives so the circuit and disconnect are ready on delivery day. Trenching is easiest before the ground freezes, and in a region that gets about 123 cm of snow a year, a tub left unpowered in January can freeze and crack. Plan the wiring early so yours isn't sitting there waiting for power.

Why Baer Electric

Local, licensed, and accountable.

  • GFCI-protected

Every hot tub circuit gets the ground-fault protection the code requires. Water and electricity need it.

  • Panel checked first

We confirm the panel can carry the tub before we start, so you don't find out the hard way.

  • Ready before winter

Wire before freeze-up and before delivery, so the tub can be filled and heated right away.

  • Cabins too

Hot tubs at the lake get the same care. We wire them at cabins around Meadow Lake Provincial Park.

  • Permitted

We take out the TSASK permit, so the installation is on record with the provincial safety authority.

How it works

What to expect.

  1. 01

    Send the tub specs

Tell us the make and model, or the electrical requirements from the manual, and where the tub is going.

  2. 02

    Check the panel

We look at your panel and the route to the tub and give you a written quote.

  3. 03

    Install

We run the circuit, set the disconnect and GFCI protection, and take out the permit.

  4. 04

    Connect and test

Once the tub is in place, we connect it, test the GFCI and make sure it heats.

FAQ

Questions about hot tubs.

What kind of circuit does a hot tub need?

Most full-size hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit with GFCI protection, and the exact breaker and wire size come from the tub's manual. Some small plug-in tubs run on a 120-volt GFCI-protected outlet.

Do I need a permit to wire a hot tub?

Yes. A new hot tub circuit is electrical work that needs a TSASK permit, and we take it out as the licensed contractor.

Will my panel handle a hot tub?

Often, but not always. Older 100-amp services and cabin panels can run out of room, so we check first. If yours can't, a panel upgrade or a sub-panel solves it.

Should I wire it before the tub is delivered?

Yes, if you can. With the circuit and disconnect ready, the tub can be filled and heated the day it arrives, which matters in winter.

How much does hot tub wiring cost?

It depends on the distance from the panel, whether the panel has room, and whether we're trenching. We'll quote it for free after a look at the site.
