Ten kilometres west of Loon Lake village, Steele Narrows is the site of the last battle fought on Canadian soil, on 3 June 1885. Today it's a provincial park. The village sits right beside Makwa Lake Provincial Park, and the names line up: in Cree, Makwa Sahgaiehcan means “loon lake”. Loon Lake counted 281 people in 2021, and it's about 44 minutes south of Goodsoil.

Makwa, incorporated in 1965 and home to 78 people, is about 58 minutes from Goodsoil. Around both villages, the RM of Loon Lake takes in farmland, the Bronson Forest, Steele Narrows and Little Fishing Lake. So the work here is a mix: barns, grain bins and farmhouses on one side, and on the other, cabins on Makwa Lake that need a panel upgrade, outdoor outlets, a hot tub circuit or a look-over before the season.
